Breast nourishment during postpartum

When we think of the concerns new mothers have during postpartum sore breasts, tender nipples, and heavy, dense breasts all come into the conversation. We do all sorts of things that range from covering the breasts with cabbage leaves, we use cold and hot compresses, but are we nourishing and caring for our breasts the way nature intended?

In Ayurveda, a beautiful system of care is offered to support the demands and transitions of this very delicate and sore area. I learned different techniques when I was in school and it meant so much to me as a sacred practice to honor the breasts.

Tip 1: Stanya Rasayana

Stanya Rasayana which translates to Stanya-Breast and Rasayana-Rejuvenative tonics for lactation and is cleansing for breast tissues. Preparing an herbalized snack that is typically bitter and sweet in a bar, cookie, or tonic form. These recipes usually will include almonds, saffron, and dates that help the quantity of breast milk production and are ojas producing. 

Most often I will prepare these with Shatavari for its rejuvenating, strengthening, nourishing, and calming effect on the body and tissues. 

Tip 2:Balanced Diet

A balanced diet with foods that promote healthy lactation, such as whole grains, leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and dairy products. Warm, nourishing foods like soups, stews, and herbal teas can support digestion and milk production

Tip 3:Hydration

Stay well-hydrated with water, herbal teas, and fresh fruit juices, especially for those having babies in the summer months. Hydration is essential for maintaining optimal milk supply and preventing dehydration, which can affect milk quality.

Tip 4:Herbal Support

 Ayurvedic herbs like Shatavari, Fenugreek, and Fennel seeds are known for their galactagogue properties, promoting milk production and flow. When are milk is flowing properly we may avoid engorgement.

Tip 5:Self-Massage

 Daily breast massage is one of the best ways to avoid clogged ducts, sore breasts, and dry, chapped nipples. Connecting to your body with a loving, compassionate touch is often neglected during postpartum. Use warm herbal oils, such as sesame or coconut oil infused with Ayurvedic herbs like Ashwagandha or Vidari, which can stimulate circulation, relieve congestion, and prevent clogged ducts.

Tip 6: Emotional Well-being

 Cultivate emotional well-being through positive affirmations, bonding activities with your baby, skin-to-skin contact, uplifting music, and seeking support from loved ones or support groups. Emotional balance is vital for hormonal regulation and lactation.

Tip 7: Create a nurturing daily routine (Dinacharya) that incorporates these practices:

  • Start the day with a warm herbal tea: Dashmula, Tulsi, Fenugreek, Fennel tea, and a Sattvic, nutritious breakfast.

  • Practice breast massage before or after nursing sessions.

  • Take short breaks for relaxation and deep breathing throughout the day.

  • Enjoy bonding moments with your baby during feeding times, fostering a loving and supportive environment.

By nurturing yourself, you are gaining the ability nurture your experience in postpartum with a calmer mind and grace.
