Traveling abroad is one of my favorite things to look forward t, but for me it has come with its own drawbacks. Living in Los Angeles, I have the opportunity of finding easily accessible health food stores, clean beauty products and healthy restaurants. Health and wellness is a big focus for a lot of Angeleno’s and as a holistic health coach and holistic birth mentor that is important.
When I began traveling more, for longer periods of time with my partner (who is French), I realized how much harder it was to maintain a fully balanced & nutritious diet. From late-night dinners, overly indulgent sweets, and breakfast that is more like a desert.
I had to figure out a plan that kept me balanced and in a state of comfort to go the long haul. So, here is how I learned to compromise and find balance with a French man who loves to indulge in food and wine and celebrate the Parisian traditions while keeping up without sacrificing my own health practices.
1. PLAN what you know you must have in the way of daily habits on your trip. Not every place in the world has what you have locally. See below for my must-have items for travel.
2. Learn the art of compromise while traveling, not every meal is going to be your ideal meal and that is ok. Having a flexible mindset can be healthier than eating a healthier meal.
3. Drink plenty of water while flying and before meals.
4. Start the day and end the day if possible with some detoxifying yoga stretches
5. Prepare your own food for the plane- this may sound unnecessary but unless you are flying first class trust me it makes a huge difference. On long flights are bodies crave foods that are hydrating and essential alive.
6. Eat smaller amounts more often- travel can wreak havoc on our digestive systems
Below are some foods that I have found to work well for travel, keep me full and satisfied and not have to eat airplane food.
Parboiled chic pea pasta with fresh basil, good quality sea salt, roasted tomatoes, and freshly grated parmesan. (When you are ready to eat ask the flight attendant for a cup of hot water add half to container, shake and eat after 5 minutes.
Raw organic nuts and seeds
Protein Bars- be sure to read the label for ingredients- watch the sugar content. Try not to exceed 7g
Seeded bread sandwich with cucumber, sprouts, avocado mash
Quinoa with chopped veggies
A whole avocado- I sprinkle salt and Olive oil -yes I bring a tiny jar of both
Dried fruit
My non-foods essential’s for travel:
SEED daily synbiotic is my go to for gut health, digestive health, skin health and cardiovascular health. Especially when I travel, it helps keep my body in balance when I eat new foods and air travel makes me bloat. So SEED is the first thing I pack for any type of travel within the country or for extended periods.
ChlorOxygen: May Neutralize toxins, Inflammation, Oxygenates the blood and boosts overall health.
Rosewater Spray: I bring this everywhere to cleanse the air and mist my face for hydration.
Essential Oils: These vary based on the season and where I am traveling. I always buy food grade, organic essential oils. My top choices are Living Libations and Doterra.
Alexis Smart flower remedies: Safe & Sound, Peaceful Warrior for anxious or stressful travel
Hydrating Hand Balm: I love OSEA Anti-aging hand cream or Aesop Resurrection Aromatique hand balm while on long flights especially.
Eye Mask: I have tried several and hands down, I love SLIP silk sleep mask for long flights, to improve sleep and in turn keep my metabolism.
Lip Balm: I use Illia Lip Wrap Reviving Balm
Dry Brush: I travel with a round dry brush for easy packing. Go for natural fibers, not synthetic. I like Primally Pure Dry brush for blood circulation, eliminate toxins and promote lymph node drainage.
