postpartum bone broth

Looking for something to sip on that allows for easy digestion and warmth to the body right after birth? This bone-broth is easy on the tummy, packed with nutrients and aids in healing and repairing when mom’s need it most. You can add/omit any items to tailor for your own taste.

Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs of beef bones (a mix of marrow bones and bones with a bit of meat on them works best)

  • 2 medium carrots, chopped

  • 2 stalks of celery, chopped

  • 1/2 sweet potato, diced

  • 1 red onion, sliced

  • 4 cloves of garlic, smashed

  • 1 piece of kombu (about 4 inches long)

  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

  • 1 teaspoon fennel seeds

  • 1 knob of ginger

  • 1 teaspoon turmeric

  • 1 t mustard seeds

  • 1 T goji berries

  • Black Peppercorns

  • Spring Water (enough to cover all ingredients by 2 inches)

Instructions:

  1. Prep the Bones: Roast the beef bones in the oven at 400°F for 40 minutes before starting your broth.

  2. Combine Ingredients: In a large stockpot, add the roasted bones, carrots, celery, sweet potato, red onion, garlic, kombu, apple cider vinegar, fennel seeds, and turmeric. Cover everything with water by about 2 inches.

  3. Bring to a Boil: Bring the mixture to a rapid boil, then reduce the heat to a low simmer. You’ll want to keep it at this gentle simmer for the long haul to extract all those valuable nutrients from the bones.

  4. Simmer: Cover the pot with a lid and let it simmer for at least 12 hours, or up to 24 hours if you can. The longer it cooks, the richer and more nutritious it will become.

  5. Strain the Broth: After your broth has simmered use a fine mesh strainer to remove all the solid bits, leaving you with just the liquid gold.

  6. Season: Taste your broth add lemon and pepper if desired. Remember, the flavors should be comforting but not overwhelming, as this broth is meant to heal and soothe.

  7. Serve or Store: Enjoy the broth warm, add basmati rice if you are looking for texture.

  8. Let it cool :Store it in the fridge for up to 5 days or freeze for longer storage.
