shatavari-the healing herb for women

Shatavari known as the “Queen” of herbs and has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine. In Sanskrit the term means: “Shat”meaning one hundred and “Avar” meaning below and translates to ‘one hundred roots”, the sanskrit meaning also translates to: “she who has one hundred husbands” referring to its building and nourishing powers in the female productive system.

It is an adaptogenic herb (adaptogens help the body adjust to physical, chemical or biological stress) . According to an article written by Paavani Ayurveda is a general health tonic to help rejuvenate and heal the body and mind.

This long celebrated herb is known to rejuvenate the female productive system and balance hormones. During postpartum it induces milk production. When menstruating it is believed to alleviate period pain and who does not like that? For women transitioning into peri-menopause a common effect on the body is a reduction in estrogen. Shatavari contains phytoestrogens which are a precursor to estrogen that may reduce hot flashes. Other health benefits include:

  • Anti-oxidant properties

  • anti-inflammatory

  • may treat ulcers

  • may help treat diarrhea

Another quick note on adaptogens, if used correctly they may have the potential for a wonderfully healing experience. But as with any medicinal herb it is always advised to speak with a certified Ayurvedic practitioner for usage and correct dosage.
