the benefits of a holistic health approach to pregnancy & Postpartum

Whether you are entering your first pregnancy or your fourth you may feel different each time.  Handling both pregnancy and childbirth through a holistic approach is like having an umbrella when it rains.  When mom is healthy, vibrant, and happy she can better provide, nurture and sustain those busy days of parenthood.

An article written by the Earl E. Bakken Center for Spirituality & Healing at the University of Minnesota discusses the four characteristics of a holistic approach to pregnancy and childbirth:

1. Consider all aspects of an individual, including mind, body and spirit.

2. Trusts the natural progression. A holistic approach to pregnancy and childbirth recognizes that a woman's body is naturally designed to conceive, nourish and give birth.

3. Starts with the least invasive approach but uses the full range of therapies as needed. This includes both low intervention approaches and the appropriate use of technology in a thoughtful and well-considered manner. A holistic approach respects the normal process of pregnancy and birth, but recognizes the need for assistance if appropriate.

4. Incorporate integrative therapies. A holistic approach includes the use of integrative therapies (also known as alternative or complementary therapies to prevent or treat common discomforts.

To enjoy a healthy, happy pregnancy there are simple practices that you can include in your routine that can be beneficial.

  • Prenatal Supplements. Talk to your doctor about the best supplement for you, be sure to include a supplement high in folic acid, iron and calcium to prevent complications due to vitamin deficiencies.

  • Eat whole foods- Be sure to include a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, seeds and fish. If you are vegan be sure to add in omega rich foods.

  • Avoid Toxins- During pregnancy and if you breastfeed, what you eat, put on your skin and breathe in goes to your baby. My rule of thumb- if you can’t understand the ingredients on the label don’t buy it. Buy organic, buy clean beauty. The Environmental Working Group has a wealth of knowledge that can be accessed through their website or through their convenient mobile app

  • Avoid processed food- This can be a tricky one when you are craving everything but the kitchen sink! The best way to manage this is by having readily made snacks available that curb cravings. If you love chocolate, keep dark chocolate on hand instead of milk chocolate. If you are craving salty snacks opt for hummus and pita chips over potato chips.

  • Create a self-care practice- This is one of the biggest non-negotiables in my holistic coaching practice. When we create a routine for daily self-care we are acknowledging our self-worth and time to heal, honor ourselves and reset. Some simple things to add into your routine can be taking a bath, meditating, working out, going for a walk, reading a book, journaling, or connecting with friends.
