Ayurvedic Postpartum Doula in Los Angeles

In home Ayurvedic postpartum care for the first weeks after birth.

After birth, a mother's digestion is at its weakest and her body is low on warmth and blood. In Ayurveda, the first 42 days are the window to rebuild her.

What a mother gives herself in the first 42 days shapes the next 42 years of her life.

I'm Courtney Lafourcade, a certified Ayurvedic Postpartum Doula and the founder of Mothersource. I was not cared for after my birth. I learned from my own imbalances how to seek help, and only later did I learn how the body recovers and what prolongs healing. Since 2022 I've been coming into the homes of new mothers in Los Angeles to do that work for them while they rest with their babies.

What does a postpartum doula do?

A postpartum doula cares for the mother after birth. Most focus on newborn care, household help and emotional support. As an Ayurvedic postpartum doula, my care centers on rebuilding the mother's body day by day through food, herbs, body care and rest.

Inside the first weeks

  • Fresh Ayurvedic meals cooked in your kitchen for the exact day of recovery you're in: porridges, gruels, broths, dals and rice pudding with ghee
  • Dashmula tea, sweet water tea and lactation tea, prepared fresh each day
  • Belly oiling and postpartum belly binding
  • Abhyanga, the Ayurvedic warm oil postpartum massage
  • Protecting your rest so you can stay in bed through the first week
  • A plan for the weeks after I leave, so your recovery continues

Why Ayurvedic postpartum care is different

Most postpartum care follows one general checklist from the first day to the sixth week. Ayurveda layers care day by day. Day one, day ten and day fourteen each call for their own foods and body care.

Food comes first. Early nourishment feeds rasa, the lymph, and then rakta, the blood. Breast milk is made from rakta. So the meals I cook start warm, soft and rich in ghee, and they change as your digestion grows stronger.

For a closer look at what to eat, read my guide to the first five days of postpartum nutrition.

The goal is for you to come out of postpartum stronger than you went in.

Questions mothers ask

When should I book a postpartum doula?

As early as your second trimester. I take few families each season, and planning before birth means your pantry, herbs and kitchen are ready the day you come home.

How long does in home postpartum care last?

Families usually book two weeks or one month. The first weeks matter most, since this is when rest and warm food do the most for your recovery.

Does Ayurvedic postpartum care work alongside my doctor or midwife?

Yes. I work alongside your medical team, and your provider guides all medical decisions.

Can I work with you if I don't live in Los Angeles?

Yes. I travel to families in London and Paris, and I offer virtual postpartum support worldwide.
